Orkney
General Information
Orkney is a group of islands situated off the north-east tip of Scotland, United Kingdom, with thousands of miles of coastline there is much for visitors to see and do and is the perfect holiday escape.
Tourism, farming and fishing are the main sources of income in Orkney. With much of the islands being low lying and surrounded by the sea, the wind blows in Orkney almost all year-round with the finest weather being May to September.
Orkney was an important strategic site for the British navy during both World Wars. Orkney has an ancient history from the stone ages to the Vikings, the islands have many archaeological interests. The island is recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
Orkney has a profusion of wildlife, especially seals and seabirds such as puffins. Whales and dolphins are also common sightings around the coast. With nature reserves, wildflower meadows, beaches with their rock pools the opportunities to spot wildlife are everywhere.
Going on the Orkney Craft Trail introduces tourists to the great number of craftspeople, painters and other talented locals showcasing their wares.

There are many activities and attractions in Orkney to keep all ages of tourists entertained, along with various festivals including the annual Orkney Nature Festival held around May.
The Orkney islands are home to two Whisky Distilleries: The Highland Park Distillery and the Scapa Distillery.
