General Information

Kintyre is located in the Highland region of ScotlandUnited Kingdom, and is long and narrow from the west to the east coast, just two hours drive from Glasgow.  This area has some of the most breathtaking scenery in Scotland.  It would have been an island were it not for the small connection to the mainland at Tarbert.  Kintyre is one of the most sought-after holiday destinations in Scotland.

Following the Peninsula across the main town in the area is Campbeltown who’s economy has for long relied on fishing and farming.  With its own airport, Campleltown is easily accessible and has many sights to see and things to do from a heritage centre, leisure centre and a great Scottish Owl Centre to name a few.

Tarbert at the top of the peninsula and at the mouth of Lochfyne, has a pretty natural harbour.  A seafood festival is hosted here every year and the settlement is home to some of Scotland’s most renowned restaurants.

Other points of interest along Kintyre is Ronachan Point, known as the “place of the seals”.  Seals are often seen basking in warmer months and in winter the fantastic array of migrating geese.  Killean, with its rocky coves and miles of sandy beaches is worth stopping for, with views over to the Island of Gigha.

Saddell, home to the ruins of a Cistercian Abbey and fully renovated 16th Century Castle, Carradale with a harbour, golf course and heritage centre;  are both villages along the way.  Skipness, at the north-east corner of the Peninsula, has the largest surviving castle in Kintyre.  This village is a must-stop during the summer months to sample some delicious seafood.

Tayinloan, Muasdale, Glenbarr, all perfect stops each place filled with individual delights from Abbey’s, garden centres to visitors centres, there is much to see and do.  Just south is Westport, an extensive sandy bay with rolling waves, perfect for the watersport fanatic or simply to relax on the beach.  From here the windy roads lead to the Mull of Kintyre, a spectacular trip for tourists to the area.

A scenic and eventful trail along Kintyre will keep the whole family entertained.  The Peninsula offers so much to visitors, memories for a lifetime!
